WALBRIDGE, Ohio -- Jones-Hamilton Co., an employee-owned manufacturer of chemical products, recently donated a sophisticated chemical analysis unit to the Chemistry Department at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio.
The atomic absorption spectrophotometer is being used by BGSU advanced chemistry students to rapidly analyze substances for the presence of metals at very low concentrations.
“We’re pleased BGSU chemistry students are taking advantage of the unit’s advanced capabilities,” said Ray Hahn, Jones-Hamilton’s Corporate Manager of Environmental, Safety & Security. “When we realized we weren’t using the equipment to its full potential, we decided to donate it to an organization that could use it to help others uncover the mysteries of chemistry.”
BGSU officials noted the unit is well suited for the analysis of environmental water and soil samples.
“The instrument upgrades our analytical capability,” said Professor Paul Endres, Ph.D., of the BGSU Chemistry Department. “It has been installed in the instrument room serving upper-level chemistry laboratories, where it is available to students and faculty to use for analytical problems associated with their research.”
The atomic absorption spectrophotometer is being used currently by advanced students in an integrated laboratory course who are working on individual projects. It is estimated that in addition to regularly scheduled class work, the equipment will be used independently on another 10 to 20 projects annually.
